My pre-interview bathroom pep-talk

You are good enough.

You are likeable. You are funny. You are genuine. You can’t make them give you a job, but you can make them like you. Focus on that.

Today you are going to talk to Senior Partners. Pretend they are your other-half’s family. Speak with courtesy. Respect. Warmth and humour. They will like you.

You are not going to be thrown off by your nerves. It’s ok that you are breathing quicker- your muscles and your brain need more oxygen. It is ok that you can hear your heart beating. It’s just doing its thing. You feel twitchy because you have adrenaline running round your system but it will give you that school-exam edge. Embrace it. It is ok. It will not get the better of you.

You have been invited to the interview because you are good enough. There’s no room for doubting yourself. (You do not actually look like a child in a suit. That is all in your head. They cannot tell that you are not really an adult. Those shoes you got on sale look fine.) Everyone else feels the same. Don’t be intimidated by the glass office building; it’s meant to be intimidating -that’s the point.

You are not going to worry about making mistakes. You will do your best and be the best version of yourself possible. And if you make a mistake you will own up to it and roll with it. You are bigger than your mistakes. You are comfortable with being fallible. You do not need people to think you are perfect.

You have to do an excellent (if imperfect) performance today. Go knock it out of the park. You’ve worked hard for this. You’ve earned it. One more hurdle. You can ace this.

Oh, and Rosie?

Stay away from the blinds.
